Overview
Properly preparing your ice machine for periods of non-use—especially in colder environments—is essential to prevent internal damage, mold growth, and costly repairs. This guide walks you through both full winterization and short-term shutdown options.
⚠️ When Should You Winterize?
You should perform full winterization if:
- The unit will be unused for more than 1–2 weeks
- The unit is in an area that may drop below freezing temperatures
- You are leaving for a long vacation
- The unit is being placed into storage
🧊 Full Winterization (Recommended for Long-Term Shutdown)
Follow these steps carefully to fully drain and protect the system:
Step 1: Run a Cleaning Cycle
- Initiate the cleaning cycle from the control panel
- This helps remove:
- Mineral buildup
- Residual contaminants
- Biofilm that could cause odors or mold
Step 2: Drain the Water Reservoir
- Remove the water reservoir drain cap
- Remove the rubber plug
- Allow all water to fully drain out
✅ Tip: Keep a towel or container nearby to catch water
Step 3: Remove the Water Filter
- Take out the installed water filter
- This prevents:
- Moisture retention
- Mold or bacteria growth inside the filter
Step 4: Disconnect Water Supply
- Shut off the water supply valve
- Disconnect the water line from the unit
✅ This prevents accidental refilling or leaks
Step 5: Fully Drain the System
- Open the gravity drain line to release remaining water
- Slightly tilt the machine backward to ensure:
- All residual water exits the reservoir and internal lines
⚠️ Important:
Any remaining water can freeze and damage internal components
Step 6: Leave the Door Slightly Open
- Leave the door open 1–2 inches
✅ Prevents:
- Mold growth
- Musty odors
- Moisture buildup inside the unit
🏖️ Short-Term Vacation Option (No Full Winterization)
If you’re leaving for a shorter period (a few days to ~1 week), you have two options:
Option 1: Leave Unit Running (Recommended for Frequent Use)
- Keep the machine powered on
- Allows continuous operation
- Ensures ice is ready upon return
Option 2: Partial Shutdown (Recommended)
- Turn off water supply
- Power down unit using control panel
- Allow drain pump to automatically remove water
✅ Benefits:
- Prevents standing water
- Reduces risk of odors
- Faster restart compared to full winterization
⚠️ Common Mistakes to Avoid
- ❌ Leaving water inside the system
- ❌ Forgetting to remove the water filter
- ❌ Closing the door completely (traps moisture)
- ❌ Skipping cleaning cycle before shutdown
- ❌ Not draining completely in cold climates
🔄 Restarting After Winterization
When you’re ready to use the machine again:
- Reconnect water supply
- Install a new or clean water filter
- Power on the unit
- Allow system to refill and begin ice production
- Wait for first batch (approx. 40–45 minutes)
✅ Tip: Run a fresh cycle to ensure clean ice before normal use
💡 Pro Tips
- Schedule winterization alongside seasonal maintenance
- Replace filter when restarting after long shutdown
- If unsure about freezing risk, always choose full winterization
